Wow...what a week for the Team GB watersports competitors! After a rocky week that saw the sailors battling with light airs that led to a few delays, Ben Ainslie became the best olympic sailor of all time, winning his third olympic gold medal. But let's be honest, we all knew he would! And fantastic stuff from the Ynling girls too! The start of the regatta saw them battling with the same light conditions as Ainslie, but the final day was dramatically different. With up to 25 knots of wind speed and 2 metre swells making visibility poor to say the least, the ladies flew over the line and onto the podium to collect their gold medal. Fantastic! Bring on 2012!
The good news for the sailors doesn't stop there. Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield sailed a fantastic regatta in the men's 470 class, scooping the silver medal. And unless something goes dramatically wrong for Paul Goodison who currently leads the Laser class, tomorrow should see him receiving the gold medal.
With 2 golds and one silver so far in the sailing regattas, Team GB are officially ranked number one in the World!!
What an awesome race for the mens coxless 4! The final 500 metres had us on our feet, shouting at the screens as they powered their way into the lead, rightfully claiming the gold medal. It was a similar story for the men's lightweight double sculls too as Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter won the first olympic gold for the event. And there's more!! A huge well done goes to the women's quad who rowed a fantastic race and netted the silver medal. We know how disappointed they were to just miss out on the gold, but we still say an enormous congratulations!!
With 2 golds, 2 silvers and 2 bronze medals, we are officially ranked number one in the world for the rowing too!
We watched David Florence's canoe slalom with extreme excitement (we're an excitable bunch here in the Ocean Addict office!) as he executed yet more superbly tight turns, especially round the uphill gates, frantically paddling his way to silver medal status. What an awesome spectacle that was!
Fingers crossed for Paul Goodison tomorrow...another gold would round the wonderful week of watersports off nicely!
Finally, we Ocean Addicts would like to wish olympic windsurfer Nick Dempsey and Ynling gold medalist Sarah Webb all the very best of luck and happiness for their forthcoming wedding.
