Sailing with babies!

I am debating whether it would be a good idea to take my 5 month old baby away sailing for a long weekend. My husband's parents have invited us and I'm not sure if it's such a good idea...Any advice from anyone with any experience?

We got our lifejacket online from body glove. It's still a little big but does the job and there's plenty of room for growth. I look forward to hearing how you get on! Have fun!

Hi piratepop! Think I can help here...I've just come back from a week away sailing with my 3 month old. I was really nervous at first too but it was completely fine and we really enjoyed it! I was worried about sea-sickness but he seemed perfectly comfortable with the motion (we were sailing a cat which is quite different to a mono...which will you be sailing?). I was also worried that he would be lulled to sleep while we were sailing during the day, and then, as a consequence, be awake all night. But he actually stayed awake most of the day and slept for the longest periods yet at night! Bonus! What they say about the sea air must be true! Getting in and out of the tender proved tricky occasionally but as long as you have a couple of people around to help, it works fine. When are you planning on going?

Thanks Pippa! Planning to go

Thanks Pippa! Planning to go next weekend. Mono, so will log on and let you know how it goes motion-wise when we get back! We've just managed to establish a routine with her and I was worried about the motion keeping her alseep at all the wrong times too, so fingers crossed we have the same experience! Did you manage to get a lifejacket small enough? If so, where from?

Go for it...

I say start them young... as long as you're all safe and there is no imminent danger, then get the little ones acclimatised. I have friends who have taken their little one out numerous times and they have said how peaceful he was with the sea air, the waves and it was a great family experience. They knew their limits and didn't do anything that was too crazy but still had a great time.

If you look at all the top yachtsmen and women, surfers, divers, wake boarders etc. they were all around water from a very young age. As long as kids have a healthy respect for the water, they will enjoy themselves and prosper in that environment.

I started surfing too late and wish I'd gotten in to it earlier and I'm sure I'd be a hell of a lot better than I am today!
